Shirley, who lived in Paddock Close, Godshill, passed away recently. Her funeral will be held at 1.30pm on 23rd September at Godshill Methodist Chapel.
A member of the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers, Shirley first became interested in town crying in the 1980s when the Island became the venue for several European and World town crier championships.
In the 1990s and through into the 2000s, wearing a distinctive peacock blue outfit, Shirley used to parade through the streets of Godshill four times a week during the summer, ringing her bell and extolling the village’s attractions to the visitors.
In 2001 Shirley was also appointed to the honourary post of town crier to the Isle of Wight.
Shirley regularly took part in European and World championships, where she never finished outside the top ten in competitions of between 35 and 80 candidates.
